Z: You probably don’t need me for story ideas, but I thought of you as I listened to some country song this a.m. on WXTU on the way in to work, with a perfectly ordinary “dirt road” chorus, but with verses that were “rapped”—but about country life. It was kind of pathetic, the quality of the rhymes. But it did strike me that that song would not have been written, nor played on the local country station here, if someone hadn’t thought that the audience would listen to it. And that suggests some interesting possibilities: including that my generation is no longer driving even the country engine, and that rap rules even for youth that would listen to country music.
Anyway, thought you’d be interested. If not, hit delete.
My mother is a better music critic than I am.Notes
